Last June 9, 2010 I was invited the the grand opening and launch of Potato Corner's The Spud Diner. It's a little place on the ground floor of The Ayala Columns at the corner of Buendia and Ayala Avenue.
They sure are serving more than just flavored fries now. We got a pretty good sampling of the unique potato dishes Potato Corner The Spud Diner is offering. Potato Sausage Surprise (P165, pictured above) is a dish made thinly sliced potato wedges, sausage bits, melted cheese, herbs and spices. That above is the actual serving size and plating, but since we were trying out so many dishes we were given smaller portions.
The portioned version of the Potato and Sausage Surprise gives you a closer look at what comprises the dish.
My companions and I agreed that the Baked Potato Lasagna (pictured above, P90 for a full serving) was delicious. It's made of potato sheets layered with creamy sauce and ground beef in between then topped with melted cheese.
While it may not look it, Tuna Sisig (pictured above, price to be announced) was actually one of the best potato dishes served that day. Tuna flakes in a slightly spicy creamy sauce enveloped sheets of potatoes.
Another tasty dish is the Italian Job (pictured above, P85 for a full serving). Thinly sliced potato wedges are mixed with tomato paste, capers, olives, cheese, and Italian spices. It's very savory with a flavor that's reminiscent of pizza.
For dessert, Ice Cream Temptation (P50, pictured above) was served to all the guests. Piping hot and crunchy fries are coated with chocolate powder and then topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Yummy! I don't think I've ever had anything like it, I'm pretty sure my kids will have a blast with this treat. :DPotato Corner The Spud Diner uses only US frozen potatoes. They collaborated with the US Potato Board in the creation of these unique potato dishes. Prices are reasonable too, there is no dish above P165.
If you're driving, I advise paying the store a visit during weekends when Makati is less crowded. It's almost impossible to park at The Columns on a weekday since there are very few slots available. If you're just within Makati, I highly suggest walking or commuting to avoid hassle.
